Fluid flow dynamics: In the automotive transmission world, this is a fancy way of talking about the way fluid or oil moves around and between friction clutch plates. Good fluid flow dynamics can lubricate steel reaction plates, absorb heat and reduce drag torque.

For any friction clutch plate, the groove pattern on the friction material will dictate fluid flow dynamics at the clutch surface when the clutch is applied, and when it is released. The Raybestos Hybrid Technology (HT) friction clutch plate, for example, allows fluid to swirl through a unique groove pattern for optimum cooling and lubrication with an impressive reduction in drag torque.

How do we know the Raybestos HT friction clutch plate performs so well? Tests, tests and more tests. Using precise SAE machines, we evaluate clutch performance with step-power tests that stress the clutch to its breaking point while measuring the E/M (Endpoint/Midpoint) ratio and coefficients of friction. The closer the E/M ration is to 1:1, the better the shift. The higher the coefficient of friction, the more energy is absorbed. Combine the two, and you have a world-class winner!
